So just HOW does ART contribute to
healing?:
It is a fact now known by neurophysiologists
that ART and the process of creating art changes a person’s
physiology and attitude. Physicians and hospitals are now
increasing their use of professional art therapists for their
patients, noting a more positive result and quicker recovery
time. It literally speeds up the healing process!
Doing art can put a person into a
different brain wave pattern which is deeply connected to
areas of feeling, meaning, imagination, and inspiration centering
on creative, more regenerating energy flows through the body.
The body’s physiology changes from one of stress, fear,
and apprehension to one of deep relaxation by going into what
is sometimes called the Right Brain; the part of the brain
which deals with cognitive function of deciphering line, shape,
and space.
The practices of creating
art through drawing and painting can have an impact on every
cell in the body to create a healing internal environment
that changes the immune system and aids in blood flow to all
the organs. As a person continues to increase in their drawing
and painting skills, they can positively affect their autonomic
nervous system, their hormonal balance and their brain neurotransmitters.
Art can immediately change an attitude, emotional state, and
pain perception. It can instill hope, positivity, and helps
people cope with difficulties. Its restoring practice can
transform a person's outlook and perception of their world.

Some people believe artists possess a magical gift or talent
that comes with
them from birth. The truth is most good artists have had to
work diligently to
achieve their high skill level much in the same way someone
would learn
to master a foreign language or a musical instrument. It takes
practice!
Learning to draw is really about learning to see. Anyone with
real desire and
basic eye-hand coordination can learn to draw/paint and with
practice
can improve dramatically. Beginners welcomed!
